Starting your career in college can be rather stressful. From signing up to your classes, to learning about your campus, the last thing that’s on your mind is probably a credit card. While a credit card isn’t an option for many students, you may want to consider one for the following reasons:

Emergencies: There’s a good chance that you have student loans or even financial aid set up. What you’re going to find out is that your student loans aren’t always accessible. What happens if you need that money for books, or you need that money for something such as food? While a credit card doesn’t have a lot in terms of a credit limit, you’re going to find that it can be there for emergencies.

Earn rewards: instead of just handing over $5 for your food, consider using a card to gain rewards. Every time you swipe your card, you’re going to find that you can get points. These points can be turned into things such as items, gift cards and more. Even if you don’t feel you have the discipline, work up a schedule to ensure that you don’t go over your limit or get too out of control.

What To Look For In A Credit Card

When choosing a credit card, there are a few things that you’re going to want to look out for when considering a student credit card. Listed below are a few things to keep your eyes peeled for when considering one.

Annual fee: Make sure that the card doesn’t have an annual fee. This annual fee is going to be paid regardless of how often the card is used. These fees can range anywhere from $20 to $50+ Be sure to find a card that doesn’t have fees.

Rewards: Try finding a card that offers rewards. There are a lot of cards that don’t offer rewards, but what you’re going to want to do is to ensure that a card is going to give you the best bang for your buck.

Major carrier: Make sure that the card is coming from a major carrier such as Visa, Mastercard,
Discover and/or AMEX. Also, make sure that the card builds you credit. If it doesn’t have the major logo or you can’t build your credit, you may find it to be rather pointless.
